Flaxseed Oil for Hair: What It Does and What It Won't
By oregion foodsGood for dryness, breakage, and scalp comfort. Not a cure for genetic hair loss. Here's the honest version.

If your hair has been shedding more than usual, flaxseed oil can help with some of the causes and none of the others. It improves dryness, scalp comfort, and breakage; this is the kind of hair fall that comes from damage rather than from biology. It will not regrow hair lost to genetic pattern baldness, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
That distinction is the whole point of this piece. Here's what the oil does, how to use it, and when to stop reading blogs and see a dermatologist.
What is flaxseed oil, and why is it used on hair?
Flaxseed oil is pressed from the seeds of Linum usitatissimum, the same plant that gives us linen. In India, you'll see it sold as alsi oil, and in Marathi as jawas tel (जवस तेल).
The oil is used on hair because of what survives the pressing:
-
Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant omega-3 that supports the scalp's lipid barrier
-
Vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps protect against oxidative stress
-
Lignans, plant compounds with antioxidant activity
-
B vitamins, in small amounts
Whether those nutrients survive depends entirely on how the oil was pressed. Heat and solvent extraction strip most of them out, which is why cold-pressed oil is the only version worth using for this.
Why is your hair actually falling?
Worth being precise here, because the cause determines whether oil helps at all.
Damage-related shedding (from chemical treatments, heat styling, hard water, or a dry irritated scalp) responds well to better moisture and gentler handling. This is where flaxseed oil is useful.
Nutritional shedding (from low intake of protein, iron, or healthy fats) responds to diet, not to what you put on your head.
Stress-related shedding (prolonged stress can push more hairs into the shedding phase at once) usually reverses on its own once the stressor passes.
Genetic pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). No topical oil affects this. It needs a dermatologist and, usually, medical treatment.
If your hair is thinning in a pattern (receding at the temples, widening at the parting, a thinning crown), start with a doctor, not an oil.
What flaxseed oil actually does
Realistic, and worth having:
Reduces dryness. The fatty acids help the hair and scalp hold moisture, which softens frizz and makes hair easier to handle.
Reduces breakage. Most "hair fall" people notice in the shower is breakage, not shedding from the root. Better-conditioned hair snaps less.
Calms a dry, itchy scalp. Mild irritation and flaking often improve with regular oiling, though persistent dandruff is a different problem needing a different treatment.
Adds shine. Smoother cuticles reflect more light. Cosmetic, but real.
What it does not do: regrow hair from dormant follicles, reverse genetic baldness, or replace nutrition.
Supplementation of flaxseed oil diminishes skin sensitivity and improves skin barrier function and condition
Flaxseed oil and linseed oil are the same plant, but not the same product
This one matters for safety, so read it before buying anything labelled linseed oil.

Industrial linseed oil is manufactured for wood finishes and paints. It contains added metallic drying agents and may carry solvent residues, and it is not produced to any food or cosmetic safety standard. It has no place on your skin or scalp — buy only oil labelled food-grade or cosmetic-grade.

How to use it on your hair
Scalp massage: the main method
Warm one to two tablespoons until just above room temperature, never hot. Massage into the scalp with your fingertips for five to ten minutes, then work the rest through the lengths. Leave it for thirty to sixty minutes and wash out with a mild shampoo.
Two to three times a week for dry hair; once a week if your scalp runs oily. Overnight is fine for dry hair, but if your scalp is oily, leaving it on longer tends to cause buildup rather than better results.
As a mask
One tablespoon of oil with two tablespoons of aloe vera gel or plain yoghurt, applied root to tip and rinsed after thirty minutes.
From the inside
Hair is built from what you eat. A tablespoon of cold-pressed flaxseed oil daily over salads or in a smoothie is a straightforward way to add plant omega-3 (never heat it), since the ALA degrades. Ground flaxseed works too, and grinding matters because whole seeds tend to pass through undigested.
If you take blood-thinning medication or are managing any medical condition, check with your doctor before adding it regularly.

Flaxseed or coconut oil?
Different jobs, and most people benefit from both.
Coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft and reduces protein loss during washing — it's the better choice for thick, coarse hair and for protecting length. Flaxseed oil is lighter and sits more on the scalp than in the strand, which makes it the better choice for a dry or irritated scalp and for fine hair that coconut oil weighs down.
Coconut oil on the lengths, flaxseed on the scalp, is a reasonable combination.
Mistakes that waste the oil
Using refined instead of cold-pressed. Refining removes most of what you're applying it for.
Using too much. More oil means more shampoo to remove it, and harsher washing undoes the benefit.
Not rinsing properly. Residue plus dead skin equals buildup and an itchier scalp than you started with.
Doing it twice and giving up. Hair grows about a centimetre a month. Nothing you do shows up in under eight weeks.
Storing it badly. Flaxseed oil is one of the most oxidation-prone oils there is. Dark cupboard, cap closed, and buy a size you'll finish in two to three months.
Who this is for
Good fit: dry or frizzy hair, mild scalp dryness, breakage from styling or colouring, fine hair that heavier oils flatten.
See a dermatologist instead if you have patchy bald spots, sudden heavy shedding, a visibly receding hairline or widening parting, or a persistently inflamed scalp. Oil is not the answer to any of those, and delaying treatment costs you time you can't get back.
Questions we get asked
Will flaxseed oil regrow my hair?
It supports the scalp and reduces breakage, so hair often looks fuller. It does not regrow hair lost to genetic pattern baldness — that needs medical treatment.
Is linseed oil safe for hair?
Only food-grade or cosmetic-grade. Industrial linseed oil sold for wood and paint is not safe for skin or scalp use.
Can I leave it overnight?
Fine for dry hair. If your scalp is oily, thirty to sixty minutes is better.
How long before I see anything?
Six to eight weeks for texture and breakage, assuming consistent use. Anything promising faster is overpromising.
What is flaxseed called in Marathi and Hindi?
Jawas (जवस) in Marathi, alsi in Hindi. The oil is jawas tel or alsi oil.
The short version
Flaxseed oil is a good, inexpensive answer to dry hair, an irritated scalp, and breakage; it is an honest non-answer to genetic hair loss. Use cold-pressed, food-grade oil twice a week, and give it two months before judging.
If you're buying, buy from someone who will show you the batch report.
